The Truck Loads And The Ways To Deliver Them

By September 7th, 2010

The shipment of huge quantities of homogenous products is referred to as truckload shipping. The amount of such products should fill up an entire intermodal container. This comprises of shipments about 7,000 kg in weight. There are companies that offer a whole load to a single customer and these are called truckload carriers.

On the other hand, less-than truckload or LTL mixes cargos from various costumers. A full truckload is better than LTL because it is not handled en route. The shipment directly goes to the costumer, unlike LTL. In LTL, the shipment is carried to different trailers, making it longer for a cargo to be delivered to a costumer.

Truckload carriers typically render a semi-trailer to the costumer. This costumer will fill it with his products and cargos where it can be transported to only one destination. Every truckload has a driver that goes with it. When the trailer is already loaded, the driver will get the required papers from the costumer. Such documents are the Bill of lading, Invoice and Customs paperwork.

If all papers are good and well, the driver can now move on. The driver usually delivers the cargos directly to the consignee. But, there are some incidents where in there will be a change in the driver. The truckload can be brought only within the driver’s availability. These drivers follow the Hours of Service regulations. And the time it takes for the cargo to arrive will depend on the distance. But generally, they travel at 47 miles every hour.

Most freightloads carriers have their own specialty. They transport specific kinds of cargos. There are those that will only bring in foods and other items that are perishable. There are also carriers who transport products that are hazardous or dangerous. This is so because different cargos have different needs and requirements.

In addition, there are laws that state which freight can be safely combined in a trailer. If you think about it, foods should never be mixed with toxic products like certain chemicals. If this is the case, the shipment will totally be a disaster.

In terms of packaging, the products can be loaded through pallets for unit loads. Strong containers are preferred like corrugated fiberboard and crates. Truck loads carriers have established tariffs that give guidance over packaging. There are also packaging engineers. They design and test the packaging in order to meet the needs of a particular product being transported. Packages should be sturdy since these cargos will undergo severe handling.

Looking back in the past, as the American Interstate Highway System expand, the trucking industry dominated the area. Various goods were transported in many places around the country. Back before the highways did not exist, the goods were transported through trains.

The highway system provided more convenience on the part of the merchandiser and costumers. Transportation of goods became much easier.Since then, truck loads carriers took advantage of the highway for the transportation of goods. The increase of truckload transportation greatly increased the time it takes for a cargo to reach its destination.
