The president called John into his office and knew that this was never a good thing when a person got called into that office. It usually meant that the person that was getting called into their was going to be let go. John was getting nervous because he had just managed to purchase a home that they had wanted to own for a long period of time.

The company was going into a transition period he was told. He knew that the next thing to come would be that he had been laid off. He hoped that the boss would not notice that he was squirming into the rattan sofa. The next thing that he knew he heard the words that he had been dreading to hear, or at least that is what he thought he heard.

That is when the boss told John that he was going to be promoted to take over a new division that they were just starting out. John looked up a little awestruck that the boss had told him that he was going to be promoted, but he was happy because he was not only getting to keep his job.

The boss decided that he would tell him that he was going to over see the travel division for the new Singapore promotion that they were starting up. He was nervous about that because the entire division would be his to build from the ground up. Doing that could allow him to pick the people that worked for him, but at the same time it meant a lot on his plate for a little bit.

John breathed a sigh of relief and started heading back to his office. He knew that he was going to have a hard time explaining this to his wife without everyone else finding out about it. However, he was under strict orders not to tell anyone in the office about the promotion or he would lose it at the same time.

As the phone was ringing he decided that he would tell his wife in person instead. He told her to meet him at the peninsula plaza for a date later on that night. She was kind of shocked, but agreed to the idea since dinner had burnt on the stove when she was answering the phone.

That evening John told her about the promotion. She was kind of shocked to hear about it since she knew that he was nervous about getting laid off. After he explained the job description to her she understood more about why he had to take the promotion, but she was really excited when she heard that he was going to get a ten percent increase in pay.
