Overseas Teaching Jobs Are Easier Than You Think

By September 18th, 2010

Teachers facing job lay-offs, teachers in diminishing subjects such as modern languages, and teachers frustrated and exhausted by the declining behaviour standards in schools today, may find their answer at the other side of the globe. International schools the world over are looking for trained teachers. There are many opportunities to get teaching jobs abroad

There are more than 5,000 international schools in almost every single country in the world, from the Bahamas to Madagascar and from Mongolia to Japan. Just last 2009, a total of 380 schools were opened according to the published figures by ISC Research, the organisation that studies the developments in the international schools market. These international schools are always trying to hire good staff and one of the first places they utilize are countries who speak English. The language of learning in international schools worldwide is English. Add this to the fact that a teacher with an excellent teaching background are regarded as extremely important in any international school regardless of country. “Once you’ve taught for a few years in a country where English is the first language you can find teaching jobs overseas anywhere in the world that you choose; the opportunities are limitless,”

Andrew, our source, has a number of years experience teaching, alongside his wife. Both were fortuitous enough to land international school teaching jobs in Europe and in other countries such as Austria and Columbia. ”We have both worked in some great schools and got to travel to some terrific places. You can even have the opportunity of picking your own country because of the number of new schools that are opening. This allows teachers to easily obtain a job in an international school.” During their time abroad, both of their two children were born.

A number of international schools offer good accommodation, very competitive salaries, and a fast-track to career development as part of the package. Young and motivated teachers are not the only ones interested in applying for a foreign teaching post. Teachers opting for early retirement or even those on a sabbatical have also taken this unique opportunity to do what they love and still be able to travel around the globe.

International schools are renowned for their exceptional facilities, excellent resources, and small class sizes. But many teachers in the UK simply don’t realise the opportunities available to them. What many teachers do not know are the long-term supply opportunities, the short-term deals, and the opportunity to transfer to another post in another country within the next two or three years. Many teachers don’t apply sooner because they were under the misunderstanding that they had to speak a foreign language. Little do they know that they are only assessed based on their teaching skills.
